Switzerland
Switzerland is engineered sublime — trains that climb through cloud into amphitheatres of rock, lake towns of Victorian composure, and the Matterhorn holding its one-in-a-million profile above Zermatt. We plan it by altitude: June to September for the high trails, deep winter for the snow, and September for the month the light gets serious.
Best for
- Alpine rail journeys
- High hiking
- Lake towns
- Effortless logistics
When to go
- Jun–Sep
- The hiking season; passes open, meadows up.
- Dec–Mar
- The winter kingdom, for snow rather than sightseeing.
