The tiled madrasahs of the Registan at dusk, Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan in October, when Samarkand's light goes gold, is the Silk Road as you imagined it before the crowds found anywhere. Registan's tiled portals, Bukhara's trading domes, Khiva's mud-walled old town — three cities strung across the desert like an argument for slow travel. The craft bazaars are real and the plov is a civic religion.
