Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, on its cliff face above the Paro valley, Bhutan.

Bhutan

Bhutan meters its tourism deliberately, and the result is a Himalayan kingdom that still feels like a confidence. Dzong fortresses hold the valleys, prayer flags hold the passes, and the Paro Tshechu in late March fills a courtyard with masked dance that predates every guidebook. We plan it slowly — acclimatising walks, farmhouse meals, one valley at a time.

When to go

Mar–May
Rhododendron spring and the Paro Tshechu; the classic first-visit window.
