Japan

Japan is the country we tell people to save until they can give it two weeks. The second cherry wave in mid-April — after the crowds thin — is our preferred spring; the maple burn of November is its equal. Between temples, ryokan baths, and trains that run like arithmetic, the real event is the everyday: a convenience-store breakfast, a timed garden, a bar with six seats.

Best for

When to go

Mar–Apr
Cherry blossom, timed to the second wave rather than the first crush.
Oct–Nov
Autumn colour in the temple towns; the light gets long and gold.
